PROGRAM AND INSTRUCTION
Long Beach Unified School District offers Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Services for eligible students starting in 3rd grade with some sites providing early learner services beginning in 1st grade. The GATE program is designed to meet the unique needs of gifted and talented students, and to maximize their academic and social development. Classroom instruction begins with the grade level core curriculum and is differentiated by the teacher based upon student need and ability ensuring positive motivation and the intellectual growth of gifted students. Differentiation of the core curriculum occurs through various means, such as, flexible groupings, acceleration of content, independent study, tiered assignments, learning centers, compacting in student’s area of strength, thinking prompts, inquiry, honors and advanced placement courses, and use of above-grade-level resources. Teachers across the district are provided with opportunities to attend staff development in GATE approaches and strategies.
